AmandaAmanda's story

“After my first bout of chemo, the pain was so excruciating, I just wanted to die. I could no longer breastfeed my son. I would sleep at the other end of the house so I couldn’t hear him cry for me.”

When Amanda Archibald was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was still breastfeeding her youngest child, Lleyton.

“I found a very small lump and thought after a week if it hadn’t gone, I would get it checked out. Four months later, I’d had a mastectomy and my first bout of chemo.

I lay in bed and threw up for five days after I got home the first time. I couldn’t see my kids for days on end as they kept asking, ‘Why did the doctor hurt you?’

“I’d lost my hair, my breast and I couldn’t look after my children.”

Amanda was lucky that her husband, mother and closest friends were there to help her and that thanks to advances in treatment she’s now enjoyed two years without cancer.
