My Personal Journey
My life changed in 2024 and not how I ever imagined it would!Working in the Horse Racing Industry, I was going about my usual duties and while putting a massage machine on a young horse, something startled the horse and next thing I knew, I had been kicked to the chest twice and unable to breath.
I collected myself and then got back on my feet and continued to work, although being told to go and get checked out - so I did! I was admitted to hospital with 3 fractured ribs and internal bruising. During a 5-day stint, the doctors came and asked a bunch of very unusual questions. Recommended actions on discharge were to follow up with my GP.
So I took him a copy of the discharge report and because it had "midly enlarged left thyroid" I was sent for an ultrasound.
That is when my world change, as soon as I saw the ultrasound I knew things had gone from bad to worse. Shortly after that I was sent for a biopsy and the results were back in less than 24 hours and confirmed my suspicious - I had just been diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer.
I was then referred to an Endocrinologist and very quickly found myself in hospital undergoing a total thyrodectomy and was told that I would have to undergo Radio Active Iodine treatment (not the nicest).
So went through all that and during that found my original job with the Police Force. At the beginning of 2025, I went for my 6 month post operative check up and got told news I didn't want - you still have cancer. The original cancer had spread to the lymph nodes in the left side of my neck.
So again more surgery to remove 48 lymph nodes and more RAI treatment, which turned out to be worse than the first round.

A few months after that (all while planning my wedding) I had another check up and was told there was now a nodule in the centre of my throat around my vocal chords. So I was sent for another biopsy, which continued to confirm cancer was still residing within my body. So I was scheduled for a central neck dissection to remove more lymph nodes. An operation that should have been quick turned into a very long wait for my husband.
I just recently had post op tests and we are now hoping that I am finally clear. Through all this I can't stress enough to ensure that you regularly check your neck and also get thyroid function blood tests done - while it has a high success rate of being able to get rid of it, the mental and physical exhaustion is just the same as the more well known cancer types.
