Hosting my 1st year

My dad

In late 2011 my dad was unlucky enough to be diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. This year marks 15 years since diagnosis, but I still remember the fear and anxiety that came with that moment. The uncertainty of what surgery would entail. How much we didn't know about chemotherapy. Would Dad be okay?

When we first saw the oncologist after Dad had had his bowel surgery, he told us that the 5 year survival rate for stage 3 bowel cancer was 50%. I assumed he meant without chemotherapy. He meant with. It felt like the bottom had dropped out of our world.

But with the skill and knowledge of his surgeon and oncologist, and probably a good dose of sheer bloodymindedness on his part, Dad successfully completed treatment and has been well ever since. Even a brush with septic shock after his second round of chemotherapy didn't stop him. Hale and hearty 15 years on from that fateful moment in the oncologist's office, he can usually be found enthusiastically and comprehensively spoiling his five grandchildren.

Please help us support the Cancer Council to continue their fight against cancer, and contribute to more good outcomes like his.
