My Why

My first experience with cancer came when I was 6 years old. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer at 32, while pregnant with my youngest sister. At a time when my parents should have been excitedly preparing to complete their family, they were instead faced with uncertainty and fear. Mum had to leave our home to access treatment in a major city - treatment that thankfully saved her life and that of my sister. My Dad, with the support of family and friends, continued working and raising three children under 6yrs old on his own, all while carrying the constant fear of losing his wife and unborn child.

Thankfully, that treatment saved the lives of my Mother and Sister, but the experience left an indelible mark on our family.

Now, we're fighting again. My Dad is currently undergoing chemotherapy for metastatic prostate cancer after first being diagnosed in 2012. With adult children spread across the country, my parents are again navigating the hurdles of a demanding treatment regime that brings as many side-effects to battle as it does positive effects. 

I'm hosting Australia's Biggest Morning Tea because if we can help even one patient or family access support, or avoid the heartache we're experiencing, we should. Cancer doesn't just affect the patient - it touches every single person in their life, often horribly and irrevocably.
We need to find a cure.
We need to provide support. 
We need to make sure every patient can access treatment.
We need to help every family get the support that gives them hope.
