Routine check turns out to be kidney cancer
Here’s a short, colleague-style story you can share:
A couple of years ago, a colleague of ours went in for what was meant to be a routine gallbladder removal. It was supposed to be straightforward—and at first, it was. But just a day later, unexpected pain led to a return trip to hospital.
While the good news was that the gallbladder surgery had gone well, a routine scan picked up something no one was expecting—a lesion on the kidney. Suddenly, what started as a routine procedure turned into something far more serious, with an urgent referral to a urologist.
Not long after recovering from the first surgery, our colleague faced a second, much bigger operation—a partial nephrectomy in 2023. Thankfully, the outcome was the best they could have hoped for. The cancer was contained entirely within the kidney, successfully removed, and required no further treatment. Since then, every scan has been clear, and kidney function is fully intact.
What really stands out in their story is the difference in how it felt. Dealing with the gallbladder was straightforward—something physical to fix. But hearing the words “lesion” and “potential cancer” was a completely different experience. The mental toll was immense, and it’s a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change.
Through it all, they were incredibly grateful for the strength and support of their family, which helped them navigate some very difficult days.
Stories like this remind us why initiatives like Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea matter—because cancer touches lives in ways we don’t always see, and support, awareness, and early detection truly make a difference. 💛

Such a moving story Michelle. Cancer touches us all, personally having lost a few people (and been lucky enough to have a few recover as the research and treatments get better). Good on you for raising some money and sharing how it has impacted you.
